Understanding disc-related pain

Herniated disc

A spinal disc has a soft center and a firmer outer layer. If disc material moves beyond its usual boundary, it may irritate a nearby nerve—but imaging findings alone do not determine treatment.

What to know

  • ✓Pain may stay near the spine or travel into an arm or leg.
  • ✓Many people improve with time and non-surgical care.
  • ✓A clinical exam connects symptoms, strength, sensation, and imaging.
